Geneva, 25 June 2021: Arçelik, the Turkish multinational household appliances manufacturer company, has joined nearly 200 forward-thinking companies as the newest member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
Led by their vision, Respecting the World, Respected Worldwide, Arçelik embed sustainability at the core of their business strategy and adopt In Touch Technology approach which enables the company to create value for all their stakeholders. They take concrete steps today towards a more sustainable future with the help of technology developed to improve the planet, life, and their business.
Founded in 1955 and headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey, Arçelik today, operates worldwide with 12 brands and employ more than 30,000 people. Arçelik consider sustainability as an ultimate goal, and not a tool; and place it at the center of all their operations. Arçelik is a company in which sustainable growth and value creation are the essential components of their business model, performing towards its ambitious targets for 2030 that signpost the next stage of its sustainability journey while encouraging consumers, stakeholders, and other corporations to live more sustainably too.
Being one of the supporters of TCFD, the company has its targets to reduce GHG emissions approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. Arçelik commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 30%, and the absolute Scope 3 emissions from the use of sold products by 15% by 2030, from a 2018 base year. After successfully becoming carbon-neutral in global manufacturing operations (Scope 1 and 2) in 2019 and 2020 through its own carbon credit, Arçelik now commits to achieve net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.
In 2020, Arçelik was once again named the Industry Leader of the Household Durables category in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. The company has also become the most sustainable home appliances and houseware company to enter Corporate Knights Global 100 World’s Most Sustainable Companies ranking. Arçelik received A- in the CDP 2020 Climate Change and Water Security Programs, and A in the CDP 2020 Supplier Engagement Program by reporting its operations in Turkey.
Arçelik’s long-term strategy and approach of sustainability challenges are well aligned with WBCSD’s new membership criteria and Vision 2050: Time to Transform which sets a shared vision of a world in which more than nine billion people are able to live well, within planetary boundaries, by 2050. To achieve this vision, the world needs transformation at scale, and business needs to focus its actions on the areas through which it can best lead the systems transformations.
Hakan Bulgurlu, Chief Executive Officer of Arçelik said: “We are proud to be joining the WBCSD. Sustainability is a pillar of Arçelik’s vision, and we are driven in our efforts to ensure a better future for us all. The business world needs collective action to make a meaningful impact, and communities like the WBCSD are crucial to that aim.”
“We are pleased to be welcoming Arçelik to the WBCSD membership. Their expertise, strategy and leadership truly show their deep understanding of what creating value for people and planet means. We look forward to innovating with them and other members to make real, tangible progress to tackle the triple threat of climate change, nature in crisis and mounting inequalities, for a more sustainable world. Only collaboration at unprecedented levels will create the impact and scale of transformations that are required for more than 9 billion people to live well, within planetary boundaries, by mid-century– as laid out in Vision 2050”, said WBCSD President and CEO Peter Bakker.
