Geneva, 10 August 2017: Port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest port, one of the world’s busiest and the first to join WBCSD. Last year, the port processed over 460 million tonnes of products from almost 130,000 ships. Besides being a logistics hub, Rotterdam also houses Europe’s largest petrochemical cluster. Port of Rotterdam has the ambition to be frontrunner in the energy transition by lowering the carbon footprint of the industry while developing renewable energy, biobased production and circular initiatives. The port now aims to further develop its sustainability agenda by partnering with WBCSD and its 200-member companies.
Port of Rotterdam President and CEO Allard Castelein stated: “We are delighted to join WBCSD and look forward to working closely with WBCSD and its member companies. It is my conviction that change will come from coalitions of the willing, companies that have the ambition to work together in counteracting climate change, delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and making sound business at the same time.”
WBCSD President and CEO Peter Bakker said “I am excited to have Port of Rotterdam join almost 200 other leading global companies at WBCSD. Ports play a central role in the world’s ability to deal with the many challenges facing global supply chains. By working with WBCSD and our member companies, Port of Rotterdam can bring its perspectives and solutions and continue to lead the way globally in supporting the transport, logistics and petrochemical sectors.”
