Resilient and future-proof built environment

Resilient and future-proof

Natural systems, such as forests, mangroves and wetlands, increasingly provide core infrastructure and ecosystem services. The strategic integration of nature-based facets can help urban areas solve an array of challenges, such as storm water management, heat stress and air quality. Across the world, the built environment will need to adapt and build resilience to the changing climatic conditions. A resilient built environment has the ability to withstand, adapt to changing conditions and recover positively from shock and stresses. Built areas will need to account for extreme weather events, water scarcity, increased temperatures, and changing sea levels, and, where possible, harness the solutions offered by natural systems.

Principles:
  • Nature-based resilience:
    • Nature-based resilience solutions are enhanced.
    • Biodiversity is promoted on and around buildings.
    • Green living roofs are created to improve water retention and reduce the urban heat island effect.
    • Green spaces can be used to reduce drought.
    • The built environment is resilient (climate-adaptive), future-proof and creates enjoyable living spaces.
  • Water:
    • Water is net-positive: the built environment produces more water than it consumes.
    • Water is recycled and managed efficiently, smartly and sustainably to handle both water excess and water shortages that are likely to occur because of climate change.
    • Water use is minimized, and a positive balance is created.
    • Reduce drinking water demand through the efficient use of water and wastewater.
  • Building adaptability (climate-responsive design):
    • Buildings should be designed to withstand temperature fluctuations (heat pressure) and be safe with changing water levels.
    • Technological advancements support heat regulation and healthy indoor climates.
    • Planning considers future climate risks.
