Science Driven: An introduction to Tire Industry Project research on tire and road wear particles

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) are tiny debris produced by necessary friction between tires and road surface; they are a mixture of tire tread and road pavement material. Since 2005, the Tire Industry Project (TIP) has supported research into the potential human health and environmental impacts of tires throughout their lifecycle. Initial TIP sponsored research has found TRWP are unlikely to negatively impact human health and the environment; however, TIP is engaged in continued research to improve scientific understanding of the potential risks associated with TRWP.

WBCSD’s TIP drives research on potential human health and environmental impacts of tires throughout their lifecycle. TIP is a global CEO-led initiative undertaken by leading tire manufacturing companies. Together, TIP member companies work towards solutions for a sustainable future on topics including end-of-life tire management, tire and road wear particles, and sustainable natural rubber.
